NSU has presented Arctic studies at the exhibition Technoprom
The International Forum of Technological Development "Technoprom 2016" has taken place in Novosibirsk from the 9th to the 10th of June. The development of the Arctic has been the Forum's main theme. Specialists from NSU have presented ongoing geological and geophysical research in this field.
At the exhibition "Technoprom", NSU has surprised visitors with globes displaying unusual continents outlines. In this way, NSU specialists have clearly shown continental drift reconstructions – one of the main application areas of the paleomagnetic method of analysis being developed at NSU, where a group of researchers has been studying the questions of the geodynamics and paleomagnetism of the Arctic regions for many years. Using paleomagnetic data, geologists reconstruct the relative positions of ancient continents and oceans and try to recreate what the Earth, and especially the Arctic, looked like hundreds of millions of years ago.

The Forum's visitors could learn how the paleomagnetic method is being used to conduct studies about the geodynamics and tectonic structure of the continental shelf of the Arctic region.

Such studies are necessary to give scientific basis to the delimitation of the outer border of the Arctic shelf of Russia in the Arctic Ocean. Russia's application to extend its boarders was submitted to the UN commission in 2015.



Results of paleomagnetic studies are also being used to reconstruct the history of the formation of the gas and oil rich basins present in Siberia and Arctic sea. In recent years, NSU has gathered the most complete paleomagnetic database for the Arctic region with its unique modern equipment. Research is being conducted in collaboration with the Institute of petroleum geology and geophysics and integrates many other organizations.

During the Forum, Novosibirsk State University and Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR) together with the investment firm Kama Flow have signed a protocol of intentions for the creation of Russia's first interuniversity venture fund. The fund aims at supporting students, PhD students and academic research as a whole. It will contribute to participants' scientific, educational and business development by investing in promising projects initiated by students, graduates, NSU and TUSUR staff, as well as small innovative businesses created in universities.

Moreover, within the framework of the Forum of technological development, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Education of Science of the Russian Federation and the State Corporation "Rosatom". Subordinate organizations of the Ministry of Education and Science can now use for free the knowledge management system, including intellectual property assets, that was developed by Rosatom specialists. Novosibirsk State University is now among the first universities that will work with the new version of the software for their information system. As the Director of the NSU Smart technologies competence Center Ruslan Permyakov noted, the system includes tools to work with patents and other intellectual property assets.
